oz to cups and cups to oz converter
oz to cups depends on what the ounces measure. For liquids, 12 fl oz = 1.5 cups. For ounces of weight the ingredient decides: 8 oz = 1.814 cups of flour but 8 oz = 1.004 cups of butter. Choose the type, enter ounces and read the cups; cups to oz works in the same box.
Example: Amount 8 · Direction: oz to cups (oz → cups) · What are the ounces: Liquid, US fluid ounces → Answer: 8 fl oz = 1 cups. Source: NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 – US fluid ounce = 29.5735295625 mL, US liquid quart = 0.946352946 L, gallon = 3.785411784 L (exact). Updated: .
How it is calculated
Two kinds of ounce, two answers
A US cup holds 8 fluid ounces, so for a liquid measured in fluid ounces cups = fl oz ÷ 8: 12 fl oz = 1.5 cups for a can of soda and 20 fl oz = 2.5 cups. The common slip is to apply that rule to ounces of weight. A cup of all-purpose flour weighs only about 4.4 oz, so 8 oz of flour is 1.814 cups, not 1. The page therefore asks what the ounces are before it gives a number.
Weight ounces per cup
With the USDA figures for one US cup, the weight of a cup is: water 8.36 oz, all-purpose flour 4.41 oz, granulated sugar 7.05 oz, butter 7.97 oz, milk 8.61 oz, uncooked white rice 6.53 oz, honey 11.96 oz. So 8 oz is 0.9569 cups of water, 1.134 cups of sugar, 1.226 cups of rice and 0.669 cups of honey, which is very dense. Butter is easy: a stick is 4 oz and half a cup, so 4 oz = 0.5018 cups, a hair over half a cup because the USDA gram value is rounded. These are averages for scooped or spooned cups; sifting, packing and humidity move them by 10 % or more, so weigh dry ingredients when a recipe allows.
UK ounces and metric cups
A UK (imperial) fluid ounce is 28.4130625 mL, 4 % smaller than the US one of 29.5735295625 mL. So 10 UK fl oz are 1.201 US cups, while 10 US fl oz are 1.25. A metric cup of 250 mL is 8.45 US fluid ounces, which is why Australian and Canadian recipes written in cups sit slightly above US ones.
Back to the measuring cup
US measuring sets have cups of 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 and 1 (and sometimes 2/3 and 3/4). The line under the answer gives the nearest one: 10 fl oz = 1 1/4 cup, 5 fl oz = 2/3 cup and 8 oz of flour by weight comes to 1 3/4 cups. Frequently asked questions
How many cups is 8 oz?
For liquid, 8 fl oz = 1 cup. For ounces of weight it depends: 8 oz = 1.814 cups of flour, 8 oz = 1.134 cups of sugar, 8 oz = 1.004 cups of butter.
How many ounces are in a cup?
8 US fluid ounces: 1 cup = 8 fl oz. By weight a cup is 4.41 oz of flour, 7.05 oz of sugar or 7.97 oz of butter.
How many cups is 16 oz?
16 fl oz = 2 cups for a liquid, which is 1 pint. Sixteen ounces of flour by weight is 3.629 cups.
How do I convert oz to cups?
Divide fluid ounces by 8: 12 fl oz = 1.5 cups. For weight ounces divide by the ounces per cup of that ingredient, for example 8 oz ÷ 4.41 oz per cup for flour.
Is a UK fluid ounce the same as a US one?
No. A UK fluid ounce is 28.4130625 mL, a US one 29.5735295625 mL. So 10 UK fl oz = 1.201 cups, where 10 US fl oz would be 1.25.
