Counted like an age: a year is complete on the anniversary of the start date. For notice periods, severance or references, breaks and earlier service may count differently; what matters is your contract, the law and any collective agreement.

How it is calculated

Length of service is the time between starting at a company and a reference date. It is given in full years, months and remaining days: someone who started on 1 March 2010 has been there exactly 16 years, 6 months and 26 days on 27 September 2026.

How it is counted

A year is complete on the anniversary of the start date, a month on the same day of the following month. If that day does not exist, such as the 31st in a short month or 29 February, the 1st of the next month applies. This follows the same counting as the age calculator on this site. As extras the table shows total months, weeks and days as well as the working days from Monday to Friday, without public holidays or leave.

Service anniversaries

Anniversaries after 10, 25, 40 and 50 years are common, and many employers also celebrate 5, 15 or 20 years. The list gives the date of every step and the distance from the reference date.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my length of service?

Enter the start date and a reference date, for example 2010-03-01 and today. The calculator gives the duration in years, months and days.

Does the start day count?

Years and months follow the anniversary; the start day itself is counted in the table’s total number of days.

When is the 10-year service anniversary?

On the tenth anniversary of the start date. If you began on 1 March 2010 it falls on 1 March 2020; the anniversary list shows all steps.
