How it is calculated
How gross becomes net in the Netherlands
Your employer withholds wage tax (loonheffing): income tax plus national insurance contributions. Unemployment, disability and health insurance premiums (WW, WIA, Zvw) are paid by the employer and do not come off your salary. Your own pension premium, if any, is deducted and lowers the wage that is taxed. You pay your health insurance policy (zorgverzekering) yourself from your net pay.
| 2026, under State Pension age | Amount |
|---|---|
| Band 1 up to €38,883 | 35.75% |
| Band 2 up to €78,426 | 37.56% |
| Band 3 above | 49.50% |
| General tax credit | max. €3,115, reduced by 6.398% from €29,736 |
| Employed person’s tax credit | max. €5,685, reduced by 6.51% from €45,592, nil from €132,920 |
The rules come from the Tax Administration’s “Rekenvoorschriften voor de geautomatiseerde loonadministratie 2026”. We compared the result with all 2,465 rows of the official white monthly table 2026: no differences.

The 30% ruling
Under the expat scheme your employer may pay up to 30% of your wage (including the allowance) tax-free, capped at €78,600 a year in 2026. The calculator takes that allowance off your gross before working out wage tax. Whether you qualify – for example the 2026 salary norm of €48,013, or €36,497 under 30 – is decided by the Tax Administration.
Limits
Not included: holiday allowance and other special payments (taxed through a separate table), State Pension age, living abroad, company car, the young disabled person’s credit and your annual tax return. Law as of 2026, checked 29 Sep 2026. An estimate, not tax advice.
