The values are rules of thumb: font, size, margins and line spacing change the number of words per page. Requirements from your school or publisher come first, and a cover page or contents usually do not count.

How it is calculated

As a rule of thumb, 500 words fit on a single-spaced page and about 250 words on a double-spaced page. A text of 3,000 words is therefore roughly 6 or 12 pages.

How it is calculated

What matters

The real number depends on font, size, margins and line spacing. If your document is already in a word processor, its word counter gives the exact figure; for characters and words of pasted text use the character counter, and how long reading takes is worked out by the reading time calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on a page?

It depends on the format: about 500 words single-spaced at 12 pt, around 250 double-spaced and about 300 on a paperback page.

How many pages is 1,000 words?

About 2 pages single-spaced, about 4 pages double-spaced and a little over 3 pages in a paperback.

How many words is 10 pages?

Around 2,500 words double-spaced and about 5,000 single-spaced. For essays the requirement of your institution usually applies.

Why does my result differ in my word processor?

Because font, margins, paragraphs, headings and images fill the page. The calculation uses averages; the actual document is always what counts.

Does the tool store my numbers?

No. The conversion runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
