What is lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is the best-known placeholder (dummy) text in graphic design, publishing and web development. It fills a page with text-like grey so you can judge typefaces, columns and layout without being distracted by the content.
Where does it come from? Cicero, 45 BC
The text comes from Cicero’s philosophical work De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the Ends of Good and Evil”), book 1, sections 1.10.32–33: “… qui dolorem ipsum, quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit …” – roughly: nobody loves pain for its own sake. For the placeholder, words were cut off (“lorem” from “dolorem”), shuffled and added, so it is no longer proper Latin. Today’s version spread with Letraset dry-transfer sheets in the 1960s. The text is over 2,000 years old and in the public domain – you can use it freely.
How the generator works
- Unit and amount: paragraphs (4–7 sentences), sentences (6–14 words) or an exact word count.
- Classic opening: optionally starts with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.”, followed by randomly mixed words from the standard passage and Cicero’s original.
- HTML: wraps every paragraph in
<p>…</p>. - Randomness: words are drawn with the browser’s cryptographic random generator (
crypto.getRandomValues). “Generate new text” gives you a different version every time.
The word and character counts refer to exactly the text you copy. To check the length of your own text, use the character counter.
Frequently asked questions
What does “lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” mean?
Nothing meaningful as it stands: it is a garbled quote from Cicero’s “De finibus”. The original (“dolorem ipsum, quia dolor sit amet …”) says that no one loves or pursues pain itself simply because it is pain.
Can I use lorem ipsum for free?
Yes. The text derives from a work more than 2,000 years old and is in the public domain. The text generated here is not protected either – copy it freely, including for commercial mock-ups.
Why use placeholder text instead of real copy?
Placeholder text does not distract from the design and has a similar mix of short and long words as real language, so you can judge type, line length and layout before the final copy exists. Replace it before publishing.
How do I get exactly 100 words?
Choose “Words” and enter 100. The word count below the text confirms the result.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. The lorem ipsum is generated entirely in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
