Audiobook speed calculator
This audiobook speed calculator divides the length of a book by the playback speed: a 10 h 30 min audiobook at 1.5× takes 7 h 00 min, so you save 3 h 30 min. Add your daily listening time to see how many days you need, or a target time to get the speed you have to set.

How it is calculated
How to calculate audiobook listening time
Listening time = length ÷ playback speed. At 1.5× you hear one and a half minutes of the recording in one real minute, so a 10-hour audiobook takes 10 ÷ 1.5 = 6.67 hours = 6 h 40 min. The time you save is the length minus the listening time: 3 h 20 min.
A 10-hour audiobook at different speeds
| Speed | Listening time | Time saved |
|---|---|---|
| 1× | 10 h 00 min | 0 min |
| 1.25× | 8 h 00 min | 2 h 00 min |
| 1.5× | 6 h 40 min | 3 h 20 min |
| 1.75× | 5 h 43 min | 4 h 17 min |
| 2× | 5 h 00 min | 5 h 00 min |
| 3× | 3 h 20 min | 6 h 40 min |
The savings shrink with every step: going from 1× to 1.5× saves a third of the time, going from 2× to 3× saves another sixth.
Words per minute
Audiobooks are recommended to be read at 150–160 words per minute, the range people comfortably hear and speak. At 1.5× that becomes 225–240 words per minute, at 2× 300–320. A 10-hour book at normal speed contains roughly 90,000–96,000 words. How long the same text takes to read silently is shown by the reading time calculator; to speed up your own audio files use change audio speed.
Tips for faster listening
- Increase the speed in small steps of 0.1× or 0.25×; after a few chapters the faster pace feels normal.
- Use a slower speed for dense non-fiction and a faster one for familiar topics or rereads.
- To plan a reading challenge, enter your daily listening time and see the number of days, or practice faster reading with speed reading.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a 10-hour audiobook at 1.5x speed?
6 h 40 min. Divide the length by the speed: 10 ÷ 1.5 = 6.67 hours.
How much time do I save at 2x speed?
Half of the length. A 10-hour audiobook takes 5 hours at 2×, so you save 5 hours.
How do I calculate audiobook speed time?
Listening time = length ÷ speed. For 12 h 30 min at 1.25×: 750 min ÷ 1.25 = 600 min = 10 h 00 min.
What speed do I need to finish a book in a set time?
Divide the length by the time you have. A 10-hour book in 8 hours needs 10 ÷ 8 = 1.25×.
How many words per minute is an audiobook?
About 150–160 words per minute at normal speed; at 1.5× it is 225–240 and at 2× 300–320.
