How it is calculated

The tool puts every line in alphabetical order, the way a dictionary does – optionally by numbers, length, or with duplicates removed. Sorting happens entirely in your browser; your list never leaves your computer.

How the order is decided

Lines are compared with the Unicode collation algorithm using the page language. That is why “Äpfel” sits right after “Apfel” in German and not after “Zebra”. By default upper and lower case do not matter; switch case matching on and capitals come first for the same letter.

To tidy text first, use the text cleaner; to shuffle a list at random try randomize list; and the text compare tool shows the differences between two versions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I sort a list alphabetically?

Paste the items into the box (one per line) and pick “A to Z”. The result appears immediately and can be copied. It works for names, words and keywords alike.

How are accented letters sorted?

By the rules of the page language. In German ä counts as a, in Swedish ä comes after z. The tool follows the collation rules of the language you are reading in.

How do I remove duplicate lines?

Set “Duplicates” to “Remove”. The first occurrence stays, and the number of removed lines is shown.

Why does “10” come before “2”?

Compared character by character, “1” is smaller than “2”. With natural number order (the default) numbers are compared as numbers, so 2 comes first.

Can I sort by last name?

Yes: enter 2 under “Sort from word no.”. The text from the second word on is used, so “Anna Berg” is sorted as “Berg”.
