How it is calculated

How to read the table

“Size” is the dimension the platform itself recommends. Smaller images are often upscaled and look soft; much larger ones get downsized. “At least” is the official minimum. Rows tagged Ad come from advertising specs (e.g. the Meta Ads Guide) and apply to paid ads; API marks upload limits of the developer interface. Where a platform publishes no pixel size, the row says “no official spec” – we deliberately don’t copy numbers from blogs.

Instagram: 1080 px wide, portrait up to 3:4

According to Instagram Help, photos between 320 and 1080 px wide keep their original resolution as long as the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 (landscape) and 3:4 (portrait) – at 1080 px wide that means a height of 566 to 1440 px. Wider photos are sized down to 1080 px, narrower ones enlarged to 320 px, and other ratios are cropped. So square (1080 × 1080), 4:5 (1080 × 1350) and 3:4 (1080 × 1440 px) all work.

Calculating height from an aspect ratio

Height = width × (second number ÷ first number). Example, 4:5 at 1080 px wide: 1080 × 5 ÷ 4 = 1350 px. Uneven ratios such as 1.91:1 are rounded to whole pixels (1080 ÷ 1.91 = 565.4 → 565 px); Instagram itself states 566 px for this format.

Safe zones

Only two platforms officially define an area for text and logos: for Story and Reels ads, Meta recommends leaving roughly 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side free. YouTube specifies a 1235 × 338 px area of the channel banner (at the minimum size of 2048 × 1152 px) that stays visible on every device.

What’s missing – and why

We found no readable official pixel spec for TikTok videos (often quoted as “1080 × 1920 px”), the Instagram, TikTok, Threads and LinkedIn profile photo, or the Pinterest profile picture. Those values are either left out or marked “no official spec”. Platforms change their specs regularly – when in doubt, the linked source wins.

Frequently asked questions

What is the right Instagram post size in 2026?

Instagram recommends a width of 1080 px and an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4. Common sizes are 1080 × 1080 px (square), 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) and 1080 × 1440 px (3:4). Larger images are sized down to 1080 px wide.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

According to YouTube Help, 3840 × 2160 px (16:9) for videos and 2160 × 3840 px (9:16) for Shorts, at least 640 px wide or tall, as JPG or PNG. Mobile uploads are limited to 2 MB, desktop to 50 MB.

What size is the LinkedIn background photo?

LinkedIn recommends 1584 × 396 px (4:1) as a JPG or PNG under 8 MB. A company Page cover image is 1512 × 256 px, and the logo is recommended at 400 × 400 px.

Why is the TikTok video size 1080 × 1920 px missing?

Because we couldn’t verify it on any official TikTok page that is readable without logging in. Officially documented are only the Content Posting API limits: video sides from 360 to 4096 px, up to 4 GB; photos up to 1080p and 20 MB.

How often are the values checked?

Every row shows its check date and source. If a platform changes its specs, the linked official page applies – the table is updated at the next check.
