How it is calculated
The tool puts a running number in front of every line: “1. text”, “2. text” and so on. You set the start, step, numbering style and separator yourself.
Numbering styles
Besides digits you can use letters (a, b, … z, aa, ab) and Roman numerals (I, II, III up to MMMCMXCIX, which is 3999). A step of 10 gives the classic line numbering 10, 20, 30 known from source code, and a negative step counts backwards.
Empty lines and paragraphs
If you like, empty lines are not numbered and not counted. The option “Restart after an empty line” starts again at the start number in every paragraph, handy for lists with several sections. Leading zeros (01, 02 … 10) keep numbers aligned and sort correctly in tables.
- Remove numbers: recognises 1. | 2) | (3) | a) | iv. | 12: | 5 - at the start of a line and deletes them, also from lists copied out of Word or emails.
- Numbers in the middle of the text are left alone, as are decimals such as “1.5 kg”.
- With the tab as separator the list can be pasted straight into a spreadsheet.
Everything is processed in your browser, and the text never leaves your device.
