UTC to EST time converter
UTC to EST: New York is 5 hours behind UTC in winter and 4 hours behind in summer. 12:00 UTC is 7:00 AM EST in January and 8:00 AM EDT in July. Enter a UTC time and the date, because the date decides which offset applies; live clocks and a whole-day table are included.

How it is calculated
UTC to EST: subtract 5 hours, or 4 in summer
EST = UTC − 5 hours, EDT = UTC − 4 hours. In winter 14:00 UTC is 9:00 AM EST; in summer the same 14:00 UTC is 10:00 AM EDT. In 2026 New York uses EDT from March 8 to November 1. A UTC time before 05:00 UTC (04:00 in summer) falls on the previous calendar day in New York: 02:00 UTC on a winter date is 9:00 PM EST the evening before.
EST to UTC: add 5 hours (or 4)
Going the other way, add the offset: 8:00 PM EST + 5 h = 01:00 UTC next day, and 8:00 PM EDT + 4 h = 00:00 UTC. Switch the direction in the first field and enter the New York time.
UTC, GMT and the letter Z
UTC is the time standard used by servers, logs, aviation and APIs. GMT is the same time of day in practice, and a timestamp like 2026-07-15T14:00:00Z ends in the letter Z for UTC. That timestamp is 10:00 AM in New York (EDT), but 2026-01-15T14:00:00Z would be 9:00 AM (EST). Never apply a fixed “−5” to a time-stamped log: use the date, as this converter does.
Why a fixed offset fails
Out of about 52 weeks, New York spends roughly 34 on EDT, so a fixed −5 is wrong for most of the year. The converter reads the offset for your date from the IANA time zone data in your browser, so changeover days are handled hour by hour.
