How the calculator works
Each country uses the time zone of its capital (or largest city); for countries with several time zones – such as the US, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Russia or Indonesia – you can choose the zone. You see the time now, the current difference, every period up to the end of next year in which the difference stays the same, and a conversion table.
Why the time difference changes
The difference only changes when one of the countries changes its clocks. The US moves clocks forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November (15 U.S.C. § 260a); the UK and the EU change on the last Sunday in March and October at 01:00 UTC (Directive 2000/84/EC). For a few weeks each spring and autumn, New York is therefore only 4 hours behind London instead of 5. Countries such as India, Japan, China or Thailand do not change their clocks at all.
Data source and limits
The calculator uses the IANA time zone database (tzdata) that your browser provides through the Intl API (ECMA-402). If a country changes its rules at short notice, the change appears with the next browser update. For countries with several time zones the selected zone applies, not the whole country.
Frequently asked questions
What is the time difference between the UK and the US?
New York is usually 5 hours behind London and Los Angeles 8 hours. Because the US starts daylight saving time earlier and ends it later, the gap is one hour smaller for about two weeks in March and one week around the end of October.
What is the time difference between the US and India?
India (UTC+5:30) is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York during US daylight saving time and 10 hours 30 minutes ahead in winter. India does not change its clocks.
Does the time difference change with daylight saving time?
Yes, whenever only one of the two countries changes its clocks, or they change on different dates. The table in the calculator lists every date on which the difference changes.
Which countries do not use daylight saving time?
According to the time zone database, among others Japan, China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Turkey, Brazil, South Africa and most of Arizona do not change their clocks.
How do I convert the time between two countries?
Add the difference if the other country is ahead, subtract it if it is behind. If the result passes midnight the date changes – the conversion table marks this with (+1) or (−1).
