4 quarts = 1 gallon holds in both the US and the UK system. The sizes differ: a US gallon is 3.785411784 L, an imperial (UK) gallon 4.54609 L, 20 % more, and each UK quart is larger by the same share.

How it is calculated

Divide by four

gallons = quarts ÷ 4 and quarts = gallons × 4. The name says it: a quart is a quarter of a gallon. So 6 qt = 1.5 gal, 3 qt = 0.75 gal and, back again, 2.5 gal = 10 qt.

The gallon ladder

Every step down doubles, except the last one: 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 fluid ounces. Put differently, a quart is 2 pints, 4 cups or 32 fl oz; a pint is 2 cups or 16 fl oz. Cooks remember it as the “Gallon Man” picture, a big G with four Qs, each holding two Ps, and each of those two Cs. The line under the answer climbs down that ladder for your number: In US pints: 20; cups: 40; fluid ounces: 320. In liters: 9.464 L (US) or 11.365 L (UK).

Which gallon?

The ratio of 4 is the same on both sides of the Atlantic, but the size is not. A US gallon is 3.785 L and an imperial gallon 4.54609 L, which makes a UK quart 1.137 L against 0.946 L. For 10 quarts the difference is 1.9 L. Cooking in the US means the 3.785 L gallon; fuel in the UK is sold in litres, but older cars and the mpg figure still use the imperial gallon.
