Liters to gallons converter
This calculator converts liters to gallons – as US gallons (3.785 L) or British imperial gallons (4.546 L): 10 liters are 2.6417 US gallons. Pints, quarts, cups, cubic meters and barrels convert instantly too.
Example: Value 10 · from: Liter (L) · to: Gallon (US) (gal (US)) → Result: 10 L = 2.642 gal (US). Source: NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 – factors for units listed alphabetically. Updated: .
How it is calculated
Liters to gallons: the formula
US gallons = liters ÷ 3.785412, or about liters × 0.264172. For imperial (UK) gallons use liters ÷ 4.54609 (liters × 0.219969). In reverse: liters = US gallons × 3.785412.
- 10 L = 2.6417 US gallons = 2.1997 UK gallons
- 50 L = 13.209 US gallons
- 1 US gallon = 3.785 L, 1 UK gallon = 4.546 L
US gallon or UK gallon?
The US gallon is fixed at 231 cubic inches; the British imperial gallon has been exactly 4.54609 liters since 1985. The UK gallon is therefore about 20% larger (factor 1.2009). For fuel economy (“mpg”), tank sizes and recipes it matters which country the figure comes from.
Pints, quarts, cups and barrels
A US gallon holds 4 quarts, 8 pints, 16 cups and 128 fluid ounces. A US pint is 473 mL, a British pint 568 mL. A barrel of oil is 42 US gallons (158.99 L). One cubic meter equals 1,000 liters.
Fuel economy: L/100 km and mpg
For US mpg: L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ mpg; for imperial miles per gallon use 282.481 ÷ mpg.
Honest limits
Cup and spoon sizes here are the US values (1 cup = 236.6 mL). Other countries differ, for example 250 mL in Australia.
