Knitting gauge calculator
This knitting gauge calculator works in three steps: find stitches and rows per 10 cm, calculate the cast-on and row count for your size, or convert the numbers of a pattern to your own gauge.

How it is calculated
The gauge tells you how many stitches and rows make up 10 cm of knitted fabric. It decides whether a sweater will fit: just 2 more stitches per 10 cm change a 50 cm width by about 4 cm.
How it is calculated
Stitches per 10 cm = counted stitches divided by measured width, times 10. The cast-on for a desired width is width times stitches per 10 cm, divided by 10 and rounded. For patterns with a repeat the result is rounded so that the stitches without edge stitches divide evenly by the repeat. To convert a pattern: the number given in the pattern times your stitches per 10 cm, divided by the pattern’s stitches per 10 cm.
Tips for an accurate swatch
- Knit the swatch with the yarn, needles and stitch pattern of the project, at least 15 × 15 stitches.
- Wash and dry it the way you will treat the finished piece, because wool changes in the wash.
- Lay it flat without stretching and measure in the middle, not at the edge.
- If the gauge is off, change the needle size: smaller for fewer stitches to the width, larger for more.
The calculator works for knitting and crochet alike; in crochet the rows may be rows or rounds.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the cast-on from my gauge?
Desired width in cm times stitches per 10 cm, divided by 10. For 50 cm and 22 stitches per 10 cm that is 110 stitches.
What should I do if my gauge differs from the pattern?
You can try again with a different needle size or convert the numbers. When converting, the repeat and shaping still have to work out.
Why should the swatch be washed?
Wool and other yarns change width and length when washed. Only the washed swatch shows the real size.
