meters = inches × 0.0254, and inches = meters ÷ 0.0254. The factor is exact, not a rounded measurement: since 1959 the inch is defined as 25.4 mm. So 36 in = 0.9144 m, 120 in = 3.048 m and, in reverse, 2 m = 78.74 in.
TV sizes are diagonals
A “55 inch” TV is 55 in = 1.397 m measured corner to corner, not across. A 16:9 screen of that diagonal is only about 1.218 m wide (47.94 in), so check the width before you buy a stand or a cabinet. A 65 in set has a diagonal of 1.651 m. Furniture is the reverse: a twin mattress is 75 in long, 75 in = 1.905 m, and a standard interior door is 80 in tall.
Reading drawings and listings
US floor plans, window sizes and lumber lists use inches and feet; most of the world works in meters. Convert each dimension once with the chart and write both: a 96 in ceiling is 2.438 m, a 30 in wide doorway is 0.762 m (76.2 cm), and a 144 in room is 3.658 m. For a room in feet and inches, turn it into inches first (6 ft 4 in = 76 in = 1.93 m).
Quick estimate
For a fast check multiply inches by 0.025, or divide by 40: 40 in is about 1 m. It is 1.6 % low in this direction (exact: 40 in = 1.016 m). Measuring a long wall or buying carpet needs the exact factor, because 1.6 % of 5 m is 8 cm.
