How it is calculated

A women’s size 38 (DE) equals 40 (FR), 44 (IT), 12 (UK) and 8 (US). For men, EU 50 equals 40 in UK and US, with a chest of 100 cm.

Where the numbers come from

Continental European women’s sizes follow from the bust measurement b in cm: IT = b/2, FR = b/2 − 4, DE = b/2 − 6. A bust of 88 cm gives IT 44, FR 40 and DE 38. British and American sizes run in steps of two (UK 4 to 28, US 0 to 24) and are matched here using the comparison chart. Japanese sizes (JIS L 4005) are matched by the nearest bust measurement.
