UCAS points calculator

This UCAS points calculator adds up your Tariff points from the grades you have or expect. Type one qualification per line – or simply your A level grades such as “ABB” – and see the points for each line and the total you can compare with a course’s entry requirements.

Examples: “A level Maths A*”, “AS B”, “EPQ A”, “BTEC DDM”, “BTEC D*”, “T level Merit”, “Higher A”, “Advanced Higher B”. A line with grades only, such as “AAB”, is read as A levels.

Not every university uses the Tariff: many offers are made in grades (for example ABB), and courses may count only certain qualifications or the best three A levels. Always check the entry requirements of the course itself.

How it is calculated

UCAS Tariff points turn grades into numbers: an A level at grade A* is worth 56 points, an A 48, a B 40, a C 32, a D 24 and an E 16. Add the points of all your qualifications to get your total. Three A levels at ABB, for example, come to 48 + 40 + 40 = 128 points.

How to use the UCAS points calculator

  1. Type one qualification per line, ending with the grade: “A level Chemistry B”, “EPQ A”, “BTEC DDM”.
  2. In a hurry? A line containing only grades – “A*AB” – is counted as that many A levels.
  3. Read the points for every line in the table and the total at the top.
  4. Change a grade to see how many points a better or worse result would bring.

Example

The preloaded list is three A levels at A, B and B plus an EPQ at grade A: 48 + 40 + 40 + 24 = 152 UCAS points. A BTEC National with the triple grade DDM on its own is worth 128 points – the same as A levels at ABB.

What UCAS points are used for

Some universities and colleges express entry requirements as a number of Tariff points (“112 points”), others as grades (“BBC”), and some combine both (“120 points including a B in Maths”). The Tariff lets them compare different kinds of qualifications. It is not a ranking of applicants, and reaching the number does not guarantee an offer.

Frequently asked questions

How many UCAS points is an A at A level?

48 points. An A* is worth 56, a B 40, a C 32, a D 24 and an E 16.

How many UCAS points are ABB, BBB and BBC?

ABB is 48 + 40 + 40 = 128 points, BBB is 120 points and BBC is 112 points.

How many UCAS points is a BTEC worth?

It depends on the size and grade. A triple grade of DDM is 128 points and MMM is 96; a double grade of DD is 96; a single Distinction is 48 and a Distinction* 56.

How many UCAS points is an EPQ?

An Extended Project is worth half an A level: A* 28, A 24, B 20, C 16, D 12 and E 8 points.

How many UCAS points is a T Level?

Distinction* 168, Distinction 144, Merit 120, Pass with C or above on the core 96, and Pass with D or E on the core 72.

Do AS levels count towards UCAS points?

An AS level carries points (A 20 down to E 6), but not in addition to a full A level in the same subject, and not every course counts them. Check the course’s entry requirements.

Do all universities use UCAS points?

No. Many make offers in grades rather than points. The Tariff is mainly useful where a course states its requirement as a points total.

Do GCSEs have UCAS points?

No. The Tariff covers post-16 qualifications such as A levels, BTEC Nationals and T Levels. Courses may still ask for particular GCSE grades separately.
