England: year groups run from 1 September to 31 August. Parents of summer-born children (born 1 April to 31 August) can ask for a later start, which may place the child one year group lower. This is the standard year group, not a decision of the school or council.

How it is calculated

In England a school year group is made up of children born between 1 September and 31 August. A child starts Reception in the September after their fourth birthday and moves up one year group every September. Scotland and Northern Ireland use different cut-off dates, which is why the same birthday can mean a different year group there.

Primary school usually covers Reception to Year 6, secondary school Year 7 to Year 11.

Scotland: P1 to S6

Scottish children start Primary 1 in August. Primary school runs from P1 to P7, secondary school from S1 to S6. Because the cut-off is the end of February, children born in January and February are the youngest in their class, and those born in March the oldest.

Northern Ireland: Primary 1 to Year 14

A child who turns four on or between 1 September and 1 July starts Primary 1 the following September; a child who turns four between 2 July and 31 August starts in the September after the fifth birthday. Primary school covers Primary 1 to Primary 7 (Years 1 to 7), post-primary school Years 8 to 12, and sixth form Years 13 and 14. That is why a Year 8 pupil in Belfast is the same age as a Year 7 pupil in Manchester.

Starting later

The calculator shows the standard year group for a birthday. In all three nations some children start a year later: summer-born children in England, children who are still four when school starts in Scotland, and “young for year” children in Northern Ireland. Schools and councils decide individual cases – if a child was deferred, they are normally one year group below the one shown.

Frequently asked questions

What school year is my child in?

In England: take the September after the fourth birthday as the start of Reception and add one year group for each September since. A child born on 15 May 2018 is in Year 4 in the 2026/27 school year. Enter the date of birth above for any other case.

What is the cut-off date for school years in England?

31 August. Children born from 1 September to 31 August form one year group, so a child born on 31 August is the youngest in the year and one born on 1 September the oldest in the year below.

What year group is an 8-year-old in?

In England, most children turn 8 during Year 3, so an 8-year-old is in Year 3 or, after the summer, in Year 4. The exact answer depends on the date of birth.

Which years are Key Stage 2?

Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 in England, for pupils aged 7 to 11. Key Stage 1 is Years 1 and 2, Key Stage 3 is Years 7 to 9 and Key Stage 4 is Years 10 and 11.

Why is the year group different in Scotland?

Scotland groups children born from 1 March to the end of February and starts the school year in August. The classes are also named differently: P1 to P7 and S1 to S6.

Why are Northern Ireland year numbers one higher?

There is no Reception: the first year of primary school is already Year 1 (Primary 1), and the cut-off date is 1 July. A pupil in Year 8 in Northern Ireland is about the same age as a Year 7 pupil in England.

Can a summer-born child start school a year later?

In England, parents of children born from 1 April to 31 August can ask for a later start; whether the child then joins Reception or Year 1 is decided by the admission authority. The calculator shows the standard year group.
