What grade do I need? Calculate the score for your target
Wondering what grade do I need on the final to reach my target? Enter your grades so far with their weights, say how much the remaining exam counts and choose your target grade. The calculator shows the score you must reach – or whether the goal is already safe or out of reach.

How it is calculated
The grade you need follows from the weighted average: you plug in your target and solve for the missing score. The calculator does that and checks whether the target can still be reached at all.
How the tool calculates
The final average is the sum of grade times weight, divided by the sum of the weights. With grades of 78, 85 and 64 weighted 20, 30 and 10, and a final worth 40, a target of 80 gives: (78·20 + 85·30 + 64·10 + x·40) ÷ 100 = 80. So x = 81.25 – you need about 81.3 on the final.
Scale and direction
In many systems (percent, points, 0–20) higher is better, so you need the score or more. In others, such as German school grades, 1 is best, so you need a value equal or lower. With scale and direction the calculator works for any grading system.
Choosing weights
- If your syllabus gives percentages (30% midterm, 40% final), use those numbers directly as weights.
- If assessments count equally, leave out the weights – each counts as 1.
- If a final counts double, enter 2 for it and 1 for a normal assessment.
The calculator cannot replace the official rules of your school or university: rounding and minimum requirements are set there. All entries stay in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what grade I need on my final?
Enter your grades so far with their weights, the weight of the final and your target. The calculator solves the weighted average for the missing score.
What grade do I need to pass a class?
Enter the passing mark as the target – for example 60 on a percentage scale – and the calculator tells you the score you need on what is left.
What does “or better” mean?
On scales where higher is better it means this value or more. Where 1 is the best grade it means this value or lower.
How do I enter that the final counts for more?
Give every assessment the weight with which it counts – for instance 40 for a final worth 40% and the matching percentages for the rest.
What if the target is out of reach?
The calculator then shows the best final average possible. You can pick a more realistic target and see which score it needs.
Does it work for letter grades?
Convert letters to numbers first (for example A = 4, B = 3), then use that scale: lowest value 0, highest value 4, higher is better.
