SGPA calculator (grades and credits)
This SGPA calculator works out your semester grade point average from the grade and the credits of every course. Type one course per line – letter grade or grade point first, credits last – and the result appears with the full working. Letter grades follow the 10-point scale of the UGC credit system guidelines.
How it is calculated
SGPA = Σ(credits × grade point) ÷ Σ credits. The semester grade point average is the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in one semester: a 6-credit course counts three times as much as a 2-credit course.
How to calculate SGPA
- Convert each letter grade into its grade point (table below).
- Multiply the grade point of each course by its credits. The result is the credit point of the course.
- Add up all credit points.
- Divide by the total credits of the semester and round to two decimals.
Example from the UGC guidelines
| Course | Credits | Grade | Grade point | Credit points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C-1 | 6 | A | 8 | 48 |
| C-2 | 6 | B+ | 7 | 42 |
| AECC-1 | 2 | B | 6 | 12 |
| GE-1 | 6 | B | 6 | 36 |
| Total | 20 | 138 |
SGPA = 138 ÷ 20 = 6.90. This is the first-semester illustration in the UGC guidelines on the choice based credit system; it is preloaded above.
Grade points on the 10-point scale
| Letter grade | Meaning | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| O | Outstanding | 10 |
| A+ | Excellent | 9 |
| A | Very good | 8 |
| B+ | Good | 7 |
| B | Above average | 6 |
| C | Average | 5 |
| P | Pass | 4 |
| F | Fail | 0 |
| Ab | Absent | 0 |
The guidelines leave it to each university to decide which marks lead to which grade. That is why this calculator does not convert marks: read the grade or grade point of each course from your marksheet or from your university’s regulations.
SGPA calculator for VTU, AKTU, IPU and other universities
Many universities keep the formula but use their own letters – S instead of O, or a scale that ends at E. In that case type the grade point as a number: “Maths 9 4” means grade point 9 with 4 credits. The arithmetic is the same.
From SGPA to CGPA and percentage
The CGPA repeats the calculation across semesters, weighting each SGPA by the credits of its semester – see the SGPA to CGPA calculator. To express a CGPA as a percentage with your university’s formula, use the CGPA to percentage calculator.
Courses that do not count
Non-credit courses marked “Satisfactory” or “Unsatisfactory” are not part of the SGPA; leave them out. A course with grade F or Ab counts with 0 grade points until it is cleared.
Frequently asked questions
How is SGPA calculated?
Multiply the grade point of each course by its credits, add the results and divide by the total credits of the semester. Example: (6 × 8 + 6 × 7 + 2 × 6 + 6 × 6) ÷ 20 = 138 ÷ 20 = 6.90.
What is the full form of SGPA?
Semester grade point average: the credit-weighted average of the grade points earned in one semester.
What grade point is an A+?
On the UGC 10-point scale an A+ (Excellent) is 9, an O (Outstanding) is 10 and an A (Very good) is 8.
Can I calculate SGPA from marks?
Only after the marks have been converted into grades. Each university sets its own mark ranges per grade, so take the grade or grade point from your marksheet and enter it here.
My university uses different grade letters. Does the calculator still work?
Yes. Enter the grade point as a number from 0 to 10 instead of a letter, followed by the credits.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA covers one semester. CGPA covers all semesters so far and weights each semester by its credits.
Does a failed course count in the SGPA?
Yes, with 0 grade points and its full credits, which lowers the average until the course is cleared.
How many decimals does an SGPA have?
The UGC guidelines round SGPA and CGPA to two decimal places, for example 6.90 or 7.38.
