SGPA to CGPA Calculator
Turn your semester results into one figure: this SGPA to CGPA calculator multiplies each SGPA by the credits of that semester, adds everything up and divides by your total credits – the method in the UGC credit system guidelines. Type one semester per line; the working appears as you type.
How it is calculated
CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester SGPAs: multiply each SGPA by the credits of its semester, add the results, and divide by the total credits. The University Grants Commission writes it as CGPA = Σ(Ci × Si) ÷ Σ Ci, where Si is the SGPA of a semester and Ci its credits, and says the result “shall be rounded off to 2 decimal points”.
SGPA to CGPA formula, step by step
- For each semester, multiply the SGPA by the credits of that semester.
- Add up these products.
- Add up the credits.
- Divide the first sum by the second and round to two decimals.
Worked example (the UGC’s own illustration)
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | Credits × SGPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6.9 | 20 | 138 |
| 2 | 7.8 | 22 | 171.6 |
| 3 | 5.6 | 25 | 140 |
| 4 | 6.0 | 26 | 156 |
| 5 | 6.3 | 26 | 163.8 |
| 6 | 8.0 | 25 | 200 |
| Total | 144 | 969.4 |
CGPA = 969.4 ÷ 144 = 6.7319, rounded to 6.73. These numbers are filled in when you open the page – replace them with your own.
Is CGPA just the average of the SGPAs?
Only if every semester carries the same number of credits. In the example above the plain average of the six SGPAs is 40.6 ÷ 6 = 6.77, but the correct, credit-weighted CGPA is 6.73 – the weaker third semester has more credits than the first and pulls the figure down. If you do not know the credits, leave them out on every line and the calculator shows the simple average, clearly marked as such.
SGPA and CGPA: the difference
- SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) covers the courses of one semester: Σ(course credits × grade point) ÷ Σ course credits.
- CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) covers all semesters so far, calculated the same way from the semester figures.
- After one semester the two are identical.
From CGPA to percentage
Once you have your CGPA, the percentage depends on the rule of your board or university – for example CGPA × 9.5 for CBSE results. The CGPA to percentage calculator handles the common formulas and any multiplier you enter.
Good to know
- Some universities leave out audit or non-credit courses, or count only the best attempts. The calculator uses exactly the lines you enter.
- Universities may round at a different step. The UGC guideline rounds SGPA and CGPA to two decimals.
- Decimal commas are accepted (7,8 is read as 7.8).
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?
Multiply each semester’s SGPA by its credits, add the products, and divide by the total credits. Example with two semesters: (8.0 × 20 + 7.0 × 30) ÷ 50 = 370 ÷ 50 = 7.4.
Can I just average my SGPAs?
Yes, if all semesters have the same credits – then both methods give the same number. If the credits differ, the simple average is slightly off; the credit-weighted figure is the correct one.
What is the CGPA after one semester?
It equals the SGPA of that semester, because there is nothing else to average.
How many decimals does a CGPA have?
The UGC guidelines say SGPA and CGPA are rounded off to two decimal points. Your university may print it differently on the transcript.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA is the grade point average of a single semester. CGPA is the cumulative average over all semesters completed so far, weighted by credits.
Do I need the credits of each semester?
For an exact result, yes. They are printed on each semester marksheet. Without them the calculator falls back to the simple average and tells you so.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA to percentage?
First work out the CGPA here, then convert it with your university’s formula in the CGPA to percentage calculator.
