CGPA calculator for Nigerian universities (5-point scale)

This CGPA calculator Nigeria students can use for any semester or for the whole programme: type one course per line with the grade (A to F, or the score out of 100) and its credit units. You get the GPA or CGPA on the 5-point scale, the class of degree it falls into and the full working.

Write the grade, then the units, for example “MTH 101 A 3”. Instead of a letter you can type the score, for example “GST 111 65 2”. The course code in front is optional. For a CGPA, list the courses of all semesters.

Working
  • Grade point × units, added up: 5 × 3 + 4 × 2 + 3 × 3 + 4 × 3 + 5 × 2 + 2 × 3 = 60
  • Total credit units: 3 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 16
  • CGPA = 60 ÷ 16 = 3.75, rounded to two decimals: 3.75

Scale used: A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1, F = 0. Some universities use a 4-point scale or have dropped the E grade – check your student handbook; your official result comes from the Senate-approved record.

How it is calculated

CGPA = total of (grade point × credit units) ÷ total credit units. On the 5-point scale used by most Nigerian universities an A is worth 5 points and an F is worth 0. A 3-unit course therefore moves your CGPA three times as much as a 1-unit course.

70–100A5
60–69B4
50–59C3
45–49D2
40–44E1
0–39F0

How to calculate your CGPA

  1. Turn each grade into its grade point (A = 5 … F = 0).
  2. Multiply the grade point by the credit units of the course.
  3. Add up the results for all courses.
  4. Divide by the total number of credit units registered – failed courses included.

GPA = 60 ÷ 16 = 3.75, which falls in Second Class Upper. These six courses are preloaded in the calculator.

GPA and CGPA: what is the difference?

The GPA covers one semester; the CGPA covers every semester so far. The formula is identical – only the list of courses differs. For your CGPA, enter the courses of all semesters in one list. Do not average your semester GPAs: a semester with 24 units must weigh more than one with 15.

Class of degree by CGPA

CGPAClass of degree
4.50–5.00First Class
3.50–4.49Second Class Upper
2.40–3.49Second Class Lower
1.50–2.39Third Class

This is the classification published by the National Open University of Nigeria; many universities on the 5-point scale use the same bands. Individual universities may add conditions – for example about carry-overs or the minimum units passed – so the calculator shows the band, not a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my CGPA in a Nigerian university?

Multiply the grade point of every course by its credit units, add the results and divide by the total credit units. Example: an A in a 3-unit course and a C in a 2-unit course give (5 × 3 + 3 × 2) ÷ 5 = 21 ÷ 5 = 4.20.

What CGPA is a First Class?

4.50 to 5.00 on the 5-point scale. Second Class Upper is 3.50 to 4.49, Second Class Lower 2.40 to 3.49 and Third Class 1.50 to 2.39.

What is the highest CGPA in Nigeria?

On the 5-point scale the highest possible CGPA is 5.00 – an A in every course.

What is the grade point of each letter?

A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1 and F = 0. The usual score ranges are 70–100, 60–69, 50–59, 45–49, 40–44 and 0–39.

Can I type scores instead of letter grades?

Yes. A number from 0 to 100 in the grade position is converted to a letter with the ranges above, for example 65 becomes a B.

How do I calculate CGPA from two semester GPAs?

Not by averaging them. Multiply each GPA by the units of its semester, add both and divide by the total units – or simply list all courses of both semesters here.

Does an F reduce my CGPA?

Yes. It adds 0 points but its credit units still count in the total, which pulls the average down until the course is passed.

Does this work for a 4-point scale?

No. Institutions on a 4-point scale use different grade points and class boundaries. This calculator covers the 5-point scale only.
