How it is calculated
One lakh is 100,000 and one crore is 10,000,000. So 10 lakh make 1 million, 1 crore is 10 million, and 100 crore make 1 billion. Both systems count the same numbers; they only group the digits differently and use different names for the big steps.

Where the commas go

In the Indian system only the last three digits form a group of three; every group before that has two digits: 1,23,45,678. Read aloud, that is “one crore twenty-three lakh forty-five thousand six hundred and seventy-eight” in India and “twelve million three hundred and forty-five thousand six hundred and seventy-eight” elsewhere. The converter shows both spellings for any whole number.
Number of zeros
- 1 lakh has 5 zeros, 1 million has 6, 1 crore has 7.
- 1 billion (100 crore) has 9 zeros.
- 1 lakh crore (1 trillion) has 12 zeros.
What this converter does not do
It changes the unit of counting, not the currency. “5 crore rupees in million dollars” needs two steps: first 5 crore = 50 million rupees (this page), then rupees to dollars at today’s rate with a currency converter. To write a cheque amount in words, see the number to words converter.
