How it is calculated
To write a number in words, split it into groups of three digits and name each group with its scale word – thousand, million, billion: 2,300,045 = two million three hundred thousand forty-five. Compound numbers from 21 to 99 take a hyphen (forty-five), and scale words never take a plural “s” after a number (three million, not three millions).
How to write a check
On a check the amount is written in figures and in words so it cannot be altered. Choose “Money amount”: 1,250.75 becomes “one thousand two hundred fifty dollars and seventy-five cents”. Many banks accept the shorter form with the cents as a fraction (and 75/100 dollars). Start at the far left of the line and draw a line through any space left over.
US or British style?
American usage, and most check guides, leave out “and” (one hundred five). British English puts “and” before the tens and units (one hundred and five, one thousand and five) – the converter shows both. In US style, “and” is reserved for the decimal point in money amounts.
Decimals
Outside money, digits after the decimal point are read one by one: 3.14 = three point one four; 0.05 = zero point zero five. Large numbers use the short scale: a billion is 1,000,000,000.
