GST Calculator (India)

This GST calculator adds Indian Goods and Services Tax to a net price or takes it out of a GST-inclusive amount – and splits it into CGST and SGST for sales within a state, or shows it as IGST for sales between states. Example: ₹10,000 at 18% GST comes to ₹11,800: ₹900 CGST plus ₹900 SGST.

Example: Amount 10,000 ₹ · GST rate: 18% (standard rate) · The amount is: without GST (add GST) · Type of supply: within one state (CGST + SGST/UTGST) → Result: Total = ₹11,800.00 (₹10,000.00 + ₹1,800.00 GST at 18%). Source: GST Council / Ministry of Finance: Recommendations of the 56th Meeting of the GST Council (press release of 3 September 2025; standard rate 18%, merit rate 5%, special rate 40%, effective 22 September 2025). Working
  • GST = ₹10,000.00 × 18% = ₹1,800.00; total = ₹10,000.00 + ₹1,800.00 = ₹11,800.00.
  • Within one state the tax is charged in two equal parts: CGST at 9% = ₹900.00 and SGST/UTGST at 9% = ₹900.00.
Rates as notified with effect from 22 September 2025 (56th GST Council meeting) and amended with effect from 1 February 2026: 5%, 18% and 40%, plus special rates of 3%, 0.25% and 1.5% for specified goods. Which rate applies depends on the HSN or SAC classification, and exemptions, cess and reverse charge are not covered here. Amounts are rounded to the paisa. How it is calculated

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India’s single indirect tax on the supply of goods and services. It is calculated as a percentage of the taxable value and added to the price. Since 22 September 2025 the structure has had two main rates – a standard rate of 18% and a merit rate of 5% – and a special rate of 40% for a small number of goods and services. Further rates of 3%, 0.25% and 1.5% apply to specified goods. The last schedule of goods at 28% was removed with effect from 1 February 2026.

Adding GST

GST = price × rate ÷ 100, and total = price + GST. Example: ₹10,000 at 18% → GST = ₹10,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹1,800; total = ₹11,800.

Removing GST from an inclusive price

Price before GST = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and GST = total − price before GST. Example: ₹11,800 including 18% → ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000; GST = ₹1,800. A common mistake is to take 18% of the inclusive amount: 18% of ₹11,800 is ₹2,124, which is too much. For ₹1,000 including 5% GST the price before tax is ₹952.38 and the GST is ₹47.62.

CGST, SGST and IGST

The total tax is the same either way – only the columns on the invoice differ. In the example, ₹1,800 is shown either as ₹900 CGST + ₹900 SGST or as ₹1,800 IGST.

Which rate applies?

The rate is fixed by the classification of the item – the HSN code for goods, the SAC code for services – in the rate notifications issued on the recommendation of the GST Council. This calculator therefore lets you pick a notified rate or type any other rate; it does not decide the classification for you. Pan masala, cigarettes and other tobacco products stayed at the earlier GST rates and compensation cess until 31 January 2026. Since 1 February 2026 they are in the 40% rate and bidis in the 18% rate, and the compensation cess on these goods has been withdrawn; other duties on such goods are not part of this calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on an amount?

Multiply the amount by the GST rate and divide by 100. For ₹10,000 at 18% the GST is ₹1,800 and the total is ₹11,800.

How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?

Divide the inclusive price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal: ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000. The difference, ₹1,800, is the GST. Do not take 18% of the inclusive price – that gives ₹2,124 and is wrong.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

On a sale within one state the tax is split equally between CGST (Centre) and SGST (state). On a sale between states, the full tax is charged as IGST. An 18% rate is therefore 9% CGST + 9% SGST, or 18% IGST.

What are the GST rates in India now?

With effect from 22 September 2025 the main rates are 5% (merit rate) and 18% (standard rate), with a special rate of 40% for a select few goods and services. The rate notifications also list 3%, 0.25% and 1.5% for specified goods. The remaining 28% schedule ended on 31 January 2026.

Is the 12% slab still in use?

The 56th GST Council meeting replaced the earlier four-tier structure with the two main rates of 5% and 18%. If you need to recalculate an older invoice at 12% or 28%, choose “other rate” and enter it.
