    How it is calculated

In short: this tool turns a picture into a pop art photo – as a colorful screen print grid with 1, 4 or 9 tiles in the style of Andy Warhol’s portraits, with comic halftone dots like old newsprint comics, as a two-color duotone or as pixel art. Everything runs in your browser, with no upload and no AI.

    How it works

    1. Drag in a photo, pick one or paste it with Ctrl + V. Until then, a sample portrait shows the effect.
    2. Choose an effect: screen print grid with a color set (classic, neon, pastel), comic halftone dots, duotone with your own color pair, or pixel art with 4 to 32 colors.
    3. Click “Save image” – PNG or JPG up to 2400 pixels, for printing, as a profile picture or as a canvas gift.

    What happens to the pixels

For the screen print grid, the photo is split into four brightness levels. The thresholds are the quartiles of the brightness distribution, so every level covers roughly the same area – which is why the effect works on bright and dark photos alike. Each tile colors the levels with a different palette, just like screen printing, where every color has its own stencil. The halftone dots mimic newspaper and comic printing: dots on a 45-degree screen whose area matches the gray value exactly (amplitude-modulated screening), plus bold color fields, black in the shadows and outlines. Duotone maps brightness onto a gradient between a shadow and a highlight color. Pixel art averages blocks and reduces the colors with the median cut algorithm (Heckbert 1982), the classic method for images with few colors.

    Honest limits

Pop art works best with a portrait against a calm background. Busy backgrounds turn into colorful blotches in the grid – cut the subject out first with “Remove background”. The palettes are our own; the effect is a tribute to the style, not a copy of specific artworks.

    Privacy

Your photo is processed only in your browser and never uploaded. Only the effect, colors and sliders are remembered. The sample portrait was generated locally for this page and does not show a real person.

More styles: photo to painting (oil, watercolor, cartoon), remove background for a clean portrait and the pixel art maker to draw pixel by pixel.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I make a pop art photo?

Drop a portrait into the tool above, choose “Screen print grid”, set 2 × 2 or 3 × 3 and click “Save image”. Free, no account and no upload.

How does the Warhol effect work?

The photo is reduced to a few brightness levels (posterization) and each level gets a flat color. Repeat the subject in several tiles with different colors and you get the familiar screen print look.

Is there a free pop art photo filter without an app?

Yes – this page works in any modern browser on phone or computer. Nothing is installed and the photo never leaves your device.

    Which photo works best?

A portrait with good light, clear shadows and a plain background. Flatly lit faces or busy backgrounds give less distinct color areas.

Can I print it on canvas?

Yes. The export is up to 2400 pixels on the long side, enough for about 12 × 12 inches (30 × 30 cm) in good quality. Larger canvases look softer up close.
