    How it is calculated

    Before a photo goes online you often want children’s faces, number plates, house numbers or personal details on documents to disappear. With this tool you mark those spots right in the picture and obscure them – no app, no account.

    How it works

    1. Drop an image, choose one or paste it with Ctrl + V.
    2. Pick a tool: Box for number plates and blocks of text, Brush for irregular shapes such as faces.
    3. Set effect and strength – the preview updates instantly. “Undo” removes the last mark.
    4. “Save image” – the full-resolution image is edited and downloaded.

    Which effect is safe?

    Pixelate replaces blocks with their average colour, Blur smears the pixels (three box blurs, the Gaussian approximation described in the W3C SVG 1.1 standard). Both look unreadable, but for text that is not always true: researchers at the University of California showed that pixelated and blurred text can partly be reconstructed with statistical methods (Hill et al., PoPETs 2016). For number plates, account numbers or names use “Black out”, which replaces the pixels completely with a solid colour.

    Honest limits

    There is no automatic face detection – you mark the areas yourself, and in return the image never leaves your device. The saved image contains no EXIF data (including location); still check reflections and backgrounds for giveaways.

    Privacy

    Editing happens entirely in your browser; nothing is uploaded or stored.

    How can I blur part of an image for free?

    How do I blur a face in a photo?

    Choose “Brush”, set a suitable brush size and paint over the face. Increase “Strength” for a heavier effect.

    Can pixelation or blur be reversed?

    In the saved image the original pixels are gone. For pixelated or blurred text, however, algorithms can sometimes guess the content. Black-out is safer for text and number plates.

    Does it work on my phone?

    Yes. Open the page in your browser, pick the photo from your gallery and mark the areas with your finger.

    Are my photos uploaded?

    No. The image is edited only in your browser.
