Barcode Generator
With this barcode generator you create barcodes for Code 128, Code 39, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF: enter the text, let the check digit be added and save a PNG or SVG, no upload.

How it is calculated
A barcode turns text or numbers into bars that a scanner can read. The generator works out character sets and check digits itself and gives you a PNG or a lossless SVG graphic.
Which barcode type fits?
- Code 128 handles all ASCII characters and is especially compact for numbers. The default for warehouses, shipping and your own labels.
- Code 39 knows capital letters, digits and a few symbols. Widespread in industry and administration.
- EAN-13, EAN-8 and UPC-A are for retail items. The check digit is calculated automatically. To sell in shops you need your own GS1 numbers; invented numbers already belong to someone else.
- ITF (Interleaved 2 of 5) encodes digit pairs and is used for outer cartons, for example as ITF-14.
Good to know
The quiet zone left and right is mandatory, or scanners fail. Never stretch the width; choose the pixels per module instead. For packaging SVG is the best choice because the graphic scales without loss. All calculations run in your browser.
Check digit, batch and margin
Check digit with working: for EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 the “Details” show how the last digit is found. Example EAN-13 400638133393: the digits are weighted by 3 and 1 alternately from the right, the sum is 89, and 1 is missing to reach 90 – the code is 4006381333931.
Batch: enter one value per line in the “Batch” field. Every line becomes its own barcode of the chosen type, all placed on one sheet that you save as PNG or SVG (up to 60). Faulty lines are named with their line number and skipped. ITF-14 encodes the 14-digit number of an outer carton; 13 digits are enough, the check digit is added. “Margin” widens the quiet zone left and right, measured in module widths.
Frequently asked questions
How do you make a barcode?
Choose the barcode type, enter the content and save a PNG or SVG. For EAN and UPC the digits are enough; the generator adds the check digit.
Which barcode is best for your own labels?
Code 128. It takes any characters, is short and readable by practically every scanner. You only need EAN-13 for items sold through retail.
How is the EAN check digit calculated?
The digits are weighted alternately by 3 and 1 from the right and added. The check digit brings the sum up to the next multiple of 10.
Can I invent my own EAN number?
Not for retail sale: GS1 issues EAN numbers under licence. For internal use, tests or stock, Code 128 is the better choice.
