SERP Preview Tool With Pixel Width

Enter a page title, meta description and URL – the preview shows roughly how the search result looks on desktop. The tool measures width in pixels, because search engines shorten by available space, not by character count.

SERP preview: check title and description width in pixels

Enter a title tag and meta description to preview the search result – with pixel width, character count and a note when the description is likely …

Approximate mock-up, not the original view. Limits (approx. 600 px title, approx. 920 px description) are rules of thumb – Google does not publish a fixed length.

Result

Title
500 px of approx. 600 px · 57 characters
Meta description
935 px of approx. 920 px · 156 characters
The description is about 15 px wider than the rule of thumb and will probably be truncated.

How it is calculated

Why pixels instead of characters?

Search results use a proportional font: a “W” is more than four times as wide as an “i”. Ten Ws measure 188.8 px in Arial at 20 px, ten i’s only 44.4 px. A title made of 60 capital M’s would be 999.6 px wide, one made of 60 lowercase l’s just 266.6 px. A fixed character limit therefore says little about whether a title is shown in full.

How the tool measures

Is there a fixed length for title tags and meta descriptions?

No. Google Search Central documents no fixed maximum for titles or snippets: titles are shortened to fit the device, and snippets are truncated as needed. Google may also replace your title and description with other text from the page – for example when they do not match the query.

The limits in this tool – approx. 600 px for the title and approx. 920 px for the description (roughly 920 to 990 px are observed) – are common rules of thumb for desktop, not official figures. On phones, titles often wrap onto several lines.

Tips for titles and descriptions

To count characters instead, use the character counter.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a title tag be?

Google sets no fixed limit and shortens titles to the available width. As a rule of thumb, about 600 px in Arial 20 px fit on desktop – how many characters that is depends on the letters.

How long should a meta description be?

There is no official limit either. On desktop, roughly 920 to 990 px in Arial 14 px are usually shown; the number of characters again depends on the letters. What matters more is that the description summarizes the page accurately.

Does Google always show my title and description?

No. Google may adjust the title and choose a different excerpt of the page for the snippet if it matches the query better. The preview shows how your own text would look.

Why does the preview differ from the real search result?

Search result layouts change regularly, differ by device and sometimes include dates, ratings or images. The preview is a simplified mock-up of the desktop view for orientation.

Are my entries stored?

Your entries stay in your browser and are not sent to a server. With “Share” you can create a link that contains title, description and URL.
