How it is calculated

The dividend yield is the annual dividend divided by the share price, expressed as a percentage. If a share priced at 50 pays a dividend of 2 a year, the yield is 2 ÷ 50 = 4 percent. With 100 shares that adds up to 200 a year, about 16.67 a month.

What the tool also shows

What the figure does not tell you

The dividend yield is a snapshot. It says nothing about price gains or losses, and a very high yield often arises because the price has fallen. For the overall return of an investment over several years use the CAGR calculator, for regular saving the monthly investment calculator, and for the compounding effect the compound interest calculator. The tool is not investment advice; it only calculates with the numbers you enter.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate dividend yield?

Annual dividend per share divided by the share price, times 100. Example: a dividend of 2 on a price of 50 gives 2 ÷ 50 × 100 = 4%.

What is a good dividend yield?

It depends on the sector, interest rates and risk. Very high figures, say above 8 to 10%, deserve a closer look: often the price has fallen or the dividend is not covered.

What is the payout ratio?

The share of earnings paid out as dividends: dividend ÷ earnings per share. 50% means half of the earnings stay in the company; above 100% the dividend is not covered by earnings.

What does yield on cost mean?

The current dividend measured against your original purchase price. If the dividend grows, this figure rises over the years, even if the price is higher today.

How much dividend do I get per month?

Annual dividend per share times the number of shares, divided by 12. Many companies pay only once or four times a year, so the monthly figure is an average.
