How it is calculated

A single homeowner with $500,000 of assets, $400,000 of them in the bank and shares, gets $736.70 a fortnight from 20 September 2026 – $19,154.20 a year. The assets test decides: $167,000 above the $333,000 free area costs $501 of the $1,237.70 maximum.

How the calculator works

  1. Deeming: financial assets are assumed to earn 1.75% a year up to $66,800 (couple $110,600) and 3.75% above, whatever they really earn.
  2. Income test: deemed income plus employment income above the $300 Work Bonus plus other income. Every dollar above $226 a fortnight reduces a single pension by 50 cents; for a couple each pension falls by 25 cents per dollar above $396 combined.
  3. Assets test: every $1,000 above the free area reduces the pension by $3 a fortnight (single or couple combined).
  4. Result: Services Australia pays the lower of the two results.

Examples

Age Pension is taxable income: see the tax calculator Australia. How long your super lasts is shown by the retirement withdrawal calculator.

Limits

You need to be 67 and meet the residence rules. The calculator uses normal rates; some people on part pensions since 2009 get transitional rates. Rent Assistance (which raises the cut-offs for renters), couples separated by illness, a partner who gets a different payment, the Work Bonus balance of up to $11,800 and special rules for income streams, granny flats or overseas pensions are not included. This is an estimate, not a Centrelink assessment.
