How to play Spider Solitaire

Spider is a patience game played with two decks (104 cards). The goal is to build complete runs from King down to Ace in one suit inside the columns. Each finished run is removed automatically; after eight runs you have won.

Layout

Rules

  1. A card may go on any card that is exactly one rank higher, whatever the suit (e.g. 7 of hearts on 8 of spades).
  2. You can only move several cards together if they form a descending run in the same suit.
  3. Any card or same-suit run may go into an empty column.
  4. When the last face-up card of a column is moved away, the face-down card below is turned over.
  5. Tapping the stock deals one new card onto every column – but only when no column is empty.
  6. When King to Ace of one suit lie in order in a column, the run is removed.

1, 2 or 4 suits

Difficulty depends on how many suits are in play. With 1 suit all 104 cards are spades, so every fitting card extends a run. 2 suits means 52 spades and 52 hearts, 4 suits two complete decks. The more suits, the less often runs fit together. The 4-suit game is considered hard: according to Wikipedia, good play wins about one game in three.

Scoring

Scoring follows the Windows version: you start with 500 points. Every action costs 1 point – dealing and undo included – and every completed run earns 100 points. Winning in 150 moves therefore gives 500 − 150 + 800 = 1,150 points. Here the score never drops below 0.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Spider Solitaire?

Place cards in descending order on top of each other (suit does not matter), but move several cards only as a same-suit run. A complete run from King to Ace in one suit is removed. You win after eight runs.

What is the difference between 1, 2 and 4 suits?

With 1 suit all 104 cards are spades, with 2 suits half are spades and half hearts, and with 4 suits you play with two full decks. More suits make the game harder, because only same-suit runs can be moved together and removed.

How many cards are in Spider Solitaire?

104 cards from two decks. 54 are dealt into ten columns at the start; the other 50 come out in five deals of ten cards.

Why can’t I deal new cards?

You can only deal when no column is empty. Put a card or run into the empty column first. After five deals the stock is used up.

Can every game of Spider Solitaire be won?

No. Especially with 4 suits many games are lost – Wikipedia puts the win rate with good play at about one in three. With 1 suit the chances are much better. Undo and Hint help you try things out.

Can I play Spider Solitaire free without signing up?

Yes. The game runs entirely in your browser, with no account and no download. Your game and statistics stay stored in your browser only.
