Classroom Seating Chart Generator
This classroom seating chart generator builds a random seating plan in under a minute: paste your roster, set the number of rows and the desk size, and tap “Shuffle seats”. You decide beforehand who has to sit in the front row and who must not sit next to whom, and afterwards you swap two seats by tapping them. Show the chart on the projector, print it, or pass it on as a link.

How it is calculated
How the generator shuffles the seating chart
Seats are counted from front to back and from left to right. When you shuffle, all names are mixed and placed seat by seat, so every possible arrangement is equally likely. The shuffle uses the browser’s secure random generator (Web Crypto) with the Fisher–Yates method – nobody is favored.
With the default settings, 24 students sit on 24 seats: 4 rows of 6 seats, in pairs. If there are more students than seats, the chart adds rows by itself; with fewer students, the seats at the back stay empty.
Rules: front row and keep apart
- Front row: students on this list are placed in the first row; their exact seat there is drawn at random.
- Keep apart: one pair per line, for example “Liam, Noah”. The generator reshuffles until no listed pair sits side by side at the same desk group. Among all arrangements that meet your rules, the choice stays random.
If not all rules can be met at once, the generator shows the best chart it found and tells you how many rules are still open.
Swap two seats
Tap two seats one after the other and the two students change places. That lets you fine-tune the result without shuffling everything again.
Projector, print and link
“Full screen for the projector” shows only the room; seen from the students’ side, the board is at the top. For your own desk choose “From the teacher’s desk”: the board is then at the bottom and left and right are mirrored. “Print seating chart” prints the room, the table and the alphabetical list – handy for a substitute teacher. The “Share” link contains the names, the room and the shuffled chart.
Privacy
The shuffle happens in your browser, and the class list is stored only there. The names never appear in the address bar. Only when you tap “Share” is a link created that carries the names and the chart after the # sign. Browsers do not send that part to the server, but it is of course in the link you pass on. For a shared link, use first names or initials only.

Frequently asked questions
Is the seating chart really random?
Yes. The names are shuffled with the browser’s secure random generator using the Fisher–Yates method. All arrangements that meet your rules are equally likely.
Can I decide who sits at the front?
Yes. Put the name under “Must sit in the front row”. The student is placed in the first row; the exact seat is drawn at random.
How do I keep two students from sitting together?
Write the pair on one line under “Keep apart”, for example “Liam, Noah”. The generator reshuffles until they are no longer direct neighbors at the same desk group.
Can I change the chart after shuffling?
Yes. Tap two seats one after the other to swap them. The rest of the chart stays as it is.
How do I show the seating chart to the class?
On the projector or smart board in full screen, or with the share link, which contains exactly this arrangement. There is also a print view for the wall or the sub folder.
Does it work with groups or tables?
You can choose single desks, pairs, groups of three and groups of four arranged in rows. For freely placed tables, use the seating chart maker.
Are the students’ names stored anywhere?
Only in your own browser. They never appear in the address bar; only the link you create yourself with “Share” contains them, after the # sign, which is not sent to the server. First names or initials are best for a class.
