How it is calculated
A roommate rent split is fair when bigger rooms pay more and the common areas are shared equally. The calculator does exactly that.
How it is calculated
- Weight per person: own room size plus the common area divided by the number of people.
- Rent: total rent × the person’s weight ÷ the sum of the weights. Example: $2,400 for rooms of 200, 150 and 120 sq ft and 250 sq ft of common area.
- Extra or discount: whoever has a balcony or private bath pays a fixed amount more; the others pay correspondingly less. The sum stays the total rent.
- Utilities: by head or by area like the rent. Power and internet always by head.
Tips for a fair household
- Measure the rooms instead of guessing – the figures in the lease often do.
- Write the rules down and save the result as a text file for everyone.
- Recalculate when the rent changes or someone moves: adjust the entries, done.
The result is a proposal for the internal split; it does not replace what your lease says. Names and amounts stay in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split rent fairly between roommates?
By room size: everyone pays for their own room plus an equal share of kitchen, bathroom and hallway. The calculator splits the rent that way and allows extras or discounts.
How are common areas counted?
Everyone shares the common area equally. Each person therefore pays rent for their own room plus an equal share of the shared rooms.
How do I account for a balcony or a private bathroom?
Enter an extra in dollars after the room size, for example “Alex; 150; 30”. The others pay correspondingly less, the total stays the same.
How do I split utilities, power and internet?
Utilities by head or by area, power and internet by head. That way everyone pays the same for what all use equally.
Can I share the result?
Yes: as an image (PNG or SVG) or a text file. The share button also creates a link with all entries.
Are my entries private?
Yes. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
