Cleaning schedule generator with fair rotation

With this generator you can make a cleaning schedule that is fair for a flatshare or family in a minute: enter names and chores, and the rotation makes sure everyone takes every chore equally often. You get a colour-coded chart to print (PNG) and, if you like, the duties as a calendar file.

Your schedule
4 people, 5 chores: within 4 weeks everyone takes every chore exactly once
Fairness
  • Rotation: at every change each chore moves on to the next person. After 4 weeks everyone has done all 5 chores once.
  • Over a full cycle everyone gets exactly the same amount of work: 110 minutes.
  • Because 5 chores do not divide evenly by 4 people, some people have one more chore per rotation. Over the cycle it evens out.

How it is calculated

A fair cleaning schedule rotates the chores: at every change each person takes over the chore of the person before. After a full cycle everyone has done every chore exactly once – even the hated bathroom.

How the rotation works

With 4 people and 5 chores each chore moves on by one person per change. The assignment is a so-called Latin square: in every row and column each person appears equally often. That is why the workload over a cycle is exactly the same for everyone, even when chores take different amounts of time.

Everyday tips

After the cycle the schedule starts again. New housemates are simply added – the schedule is recalculated immediately. Everything stays in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a cleaning schedule for a flatshare?

Enter names and chores, choose the rotation interval and save the chart as PNG. The rotation distributes all chores fairly by itself.

How do I split chores fairly?

By rotation: at every change each chore moves to the next person. After a full cycle everyone has done every chore equally often.

How often should the schedule rotate?

Weekly is common for flatshares. For bigger chores like windows or the oven you can choose a monthly rotation.

Is there a printable cleaning schedule template?

Yes, “Save schedule as PNG” creates a finished colour-coded chart that you can print on A4 or share by messenger.

Can I put the schedule into my calendar?

Yes, with “Cleaning duties as ICS file”. Each person and period gets an event. Import the file into a shared calendar so everyone sees their duty.

What if there are more chores than people?

Then some people have several chores per rotation. The rotation evens it out over the cycle so that everyone does the same amount.
