Bar to psi converter

This calculator converts bar to psi: 1 bar is 14.504 psi, so 2.5 bar is about 36.26 psi. Pascal, kilopascal, millibar, atmosphere, mmHg and water column convert instantly too – handy for tire pressure, compressors and weather data.

Example: Value 2.5 · from: Bar (bar) · to: Pounds per square inch (psi) → Result: 2.5 bar = 36.259 psi. Source: NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 – factors for units listed alphabetically. Updated: .

Gauges and tire-pressure checkers usually show gauge pressure (bar(g) or psig), i.e. pressure above the surroundings. Absolute pressure (psia) is about 1.013 bar or 14.7 psi higher.

How it is calculated

Bar to psi: the formula

psi = bar × 14.5038. In reverse, bar = psi ÷ 14.5038 (which is psi × 0.0689476).

How the units are defined

1 bar is exactly 100,000 Pa (100 kPa, 1,000 hPa). 1 psi is the force of one pound (lbf) on one square inch: 6,894.757 Pa. The standard atmosphere is fixed at 101,325 Pa (1.01325 bar = 14.696 psi), and 1 Torr is 1/760 of that. One conventional millimeter of mercury is 133.322 Pa; 1 bar equals 750.06 mmHg.

psi, psig and psia

The number converts the same way in both cases. What matters is the reference: psig and bar(g) are measured relative to ambient pressure, psia and bar(a) absolutely against vacuum. A tire at 2.5 bar gauge is about 3.5 bar absolute.

Water column for a feel

One bar equals about 10.2 m of water – at 10 m depth the water adds roughly another 1 bar on top of atmospheric pressure.

Honest limits

The calculator only converts units. The permitted tire or operating pressure is given in the vehicle or equipment manual and on the rating plate.

Frequently asked questions

How many psi is 1 bar?

1 bar is 14.504 psi. 2 bar is 29.01 psi and 3 bar is 43.51 psi.

How do I convert bar to psi?

Multiply the value in bar by 14.5038: 2.5 bar × 14.5038 = 36.26 psi. As a rule of thumb, × 14.5 is close enough.

How many bar is 32 psi?

32 psi is 2.206 bar – a typical car tire pressure in the US.

What is the difference between psi and psig?

psi is the unit; psig means gauge pressure above ambient, psia means absolute pressure. The two differ by about 14.7 psi of atmosphere.

How many bar is 1 atm?

One standard atmosphere is 1.01325 bar or 14.696 psi.
