Bar to kPa converter

Bar to kPa is a shift of the decimal point: one bar is exactly 100 kilopascals. Enter a pressure and the kPa appear as you type, with psi, atmospheres and MPa below; kPa to bar works in the same box.

Example: Pressure 1 · Direction: Bar to kilopascals → Answer: 1 bar = 100 kPa. Source: NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8: bar = 1.0 E+02 kPa (exact), atmosphere, standard = 1.013 25 E+02 kPa, pound-force per square inch = 6.894 757 kPa (read 15.10.2026). Updated: .

How it is calculated

How to convert bar to kPa

kPa = bar × 100 and bar = kPa ÷ 100. The bar is defined as 100,000 pascals and a kilopascal is 1,000 pascals, so the factor is exactly 100. A tire at 2.2 bar is at 220 kPa, a reading of 250 kPa is 2.5 bar, and 1 bar is also 0.1 MPa.

Where you meet both units

European tire placards and pumps show bar, many car manuals and gauges show kilopascals, and US gauges show psi. One bar is 14.5038 psi, so 220 kPa is 31.9083 psi. Weather maps use hectopascals: the standard 1,013.25 hPa equals 101.325 kPa or 1.01325 bar. For psi directly use bar to psi or kPa to psi.

Common mistakes

Kilopascal and megapascal differ by a factor of 1,000: 10 bar is 1,000 kPa but only 1 MPa. Hydraulic and pipe ratings often use MPa, which is why the converter shows it as well. Tire gauges show pressure above the surrounding air, not absolute pressure. Tire pressure also drops in the cold; the tire pressure temperature calculator shows how much.

Frequently asked questions

How many kPa is 1 bar?

1 bar = 100 kPa exactly.

How do I convert bar to kPa?

Multiply by 100: 2.2 bar × 100 = 220 kPa.

How do I convert kPa to bar?

Divide by 100: 250 kPa ÷ 100 = 2.5 bar.

How many psi is 1 bar?

1 bar = 14.5038 psi, and 100 kPa is the same.

Is 1 bar the same as 1 atmosphere?

Almost. One atmosphere is 101.325 kPa, which is 1.01325 bar.
