GPA calculator for Australian universities (7-point scale)

This GPA calculator Australia students can use for the 7-point scale multiplies the grade points of each course by its credit points, adds the results and divides by the total credit points. Type one course per line – grade first, credit points last. A switch changes to the 4-point scale some universities use.

Write the grade (HD, D, C, P) or the grade point as a number, then the credit points or units, for example “STAT1000 D 10” or “STAT1000 6 10”. Enter fail grades as the number your university assigns.

  • Grade points × credit points, added up: 7 × 10 + 6 × 10 + 5 × 10 + 4 × 20 = 260
  • Total credit points: 10 + 10 + 10 + 20 = 50
  • GPA = 260 ÷ 50 = 5.2, rounded to two decimals: 5.20

How it is calculated

GPA = Σ(grade points × credit points) ÷ Σ credit points. On the 7-point scale most Australian universities use, a High Distinction is worth 7, a Distinction 6, a Credit 5 and a Pass 4. A course with more credit points weighs more.

How to calculate your GPA

  1. Turn each grade into grade points (table below).
  2. Multiply the grade points of each course by its credit points or units.
  3. Add up the products and add up the credit points.
  4. Divide the first sum by the second.

Example

CourseGradeGrade pointsCredit pointsProduct
Course 1HD71070
Course 2D61060
Course 3C51050
Course 4P42080
Total50260

GPA = 260 ÷ 50 = 5.20. The plain average of the four grades would be 5.5; the weighted result is lower because the Pass belongs to the largest course. On the 4-point scale the same grades give (40 + 30 + 20 + 20) ÷ 50 = 110 ÷ 50 = 2.20.

The 7-point scale is the most common one. Monash, Swinburne, Bond, Murdoch and RMIT are examples of universities that use a 4-point scale instead. For conceded passes and fails on the 7-point scale, universities assign different values, so the calculator asks you to type the number – for example “BIOL1020 1.5 10”.

GPA or WAM?

A GPA averages grade points; a weighted average mark averages the marks out of 100 themselves. Melbourne, UNSW, Sydney and Wollongong are among the universities that report a WAM. If that is what you need, use the WAM calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated in Australia?

Multiply the grade points of each course by its credit points, add the results and divide by the total credit points. Example: (7 × 10 + 6 × 10 + 5 × 10 + 4 × 20) ÷ 50 = 260 ÷ 50 = 5.20.

What is a High Distinction worth on the 7-point scale?

7 grade points. A Distinction is 6, a Credit 5 and a Pass 4.

Which universities use a 4-point GPA?

Monash, Swinburne, Bond, Murdoch and RMIT are examples: HD 4, D 3, C 2, P 1 and 0 for a fail. Choose “4-point scale” above.

How do I enter a fail?

On the 7-point scale, type the grade point your university assigns to that fail grade as a number, then the credit points. On the 4-point scale you can write F.

Do all courses need the same credit points?

No. Enter the credit points or units of each course; larger courses count more. If all courses are the same size, the GPA equals the plain average.

What is the difference between GPA and WAM?

GPA is an average of grade points, WAM an average of marks out of 100. Two students with the same GPA can have different WAMs.

Can I convert a 7-point GPA to a 4.0 GPA?

Not with a simple formula. The scales assign points differently, and overseas institutions usually convert grade by grade. Recalculate with the other scale instead.

Why does my result differ from my academic record?

Universities decide which attempts and result types are included. The record is the official figure; this calculator applies the formula to exactly the lines you enter.
