Values of the UC Berkeley registrar (unweighted). There is no national standard – e.g. some colleges use A− = 3.67 or A+ = 4.3, and high schools often add points for honors/AP classes (weighted GPA).

How it is calculated

Letter grades on the 4.0 GPA scale

US high schools and colleges report letter grades that are turned into grade points for the grade point average (GPA). The College Board’s basic scale is A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0; for plus and minus grades this converter uses the values of the UC Berkeley registrar:

Letter gradeGrade points
A+ / A4.0
A−3.7
B+3.3
B3.0
B−2.7
C+2.3
C2.0
C−1.7
D+1.3
D1.0
D−0.7
F0.0

Limits: there is no single national standard. Wellesley College, for example, counts an A− as 3.67 and a B+ as 3.33, some colleges give 4.3 for an A+, some use no plus/minus steps, and weighted GPAs add points for honors, AP or IB classes. The percentage behind each letter also varies by school, so this converter does not guess letters from percentages. To average several grades with credits, use the GPA calculator.

Germany: IHK scale, 15-point system and Abitur grade

German vocational exams run by the Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK) are marked out of 100 points. The model exam regulations of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB, 2025, § 24) assign each score a decimal grade and a grade in words: 100–92 = 1.0–1.4 (very good), 91–81 = 1.5–2.4 (good), 80–67 = 2.5–3.4, 66–50 = 3.5–4.4, 49–30 = 4.5–5.4, 29–0 = 5.5–6.0. In the upper secondary school (gymnasiale Oberstufe) 15–13 points correspond to grade 1, down to 0 points = grade 6; for written Abitur exams the KMK sets minimum percentages per point score (95% = 15 points, 70% = 10, 45% = 5, 20% = 1). The final Abitur grade is calculated from the total points E (300–900) with the formula of the Standing Conference of education ministers (KMK): N = 17/3 − E/180, cut off – not rounded – after one decimal. 823 points or more give the top grade 1.0.

France, Spain and Brazil

In France, the baccalauréat is passed with an average of at least 10/20 (8 to under 10 allows an oral resit); averages of 12, 14 and 16 earn the honours assez bien, bien and très bien, 18 adds the jury’s congratulations (Code de l’éducation, art. D334-8 and D334-11). Spanish universities grade 0–10: below 5 is suspenso, 5–6.9 aprobado, 7–8.9 notable, 9–10 sobresaliente (Real Decreto 1125/2003). Brazil has no nationwide pass mark, so the converter only rescales to 0–10 and compares with the pass mark you enter.

Frequently asked questions

What GPA is a B+?

On the standard unweighted 4.0 scale a B+ is 3.3 grade points. A B is 3.0 and a B− is 2.7.

Is an A+ a 4.0 or 4.3?

At many colleges, e.g. UC Berkeley, an A+ counts as 4.0, the maximum of the unweighted scale – that is what this converter uses. Some colleges use 4.3; check your school’s grading policy.

How do I convert a percentage to a letter grade?

That depends on your school’s grading scale – 90 % is an A at some schools and an A− at others. Look up the cut-offs in your syllabus, then convert the letter here.

How is the German Abitur grade calculated?

From the total points E (300–900) with N = 17/3 − E/180, cut off after the first decimal. For example 700 points → 1.777… → 1.7; 823 points or more → 1.0.

What is a good mark out of 20 in France?

10/20 is a pass. For the baccalauréat, an average of 12 earns “assez bien”, 14 “bien”, 16 “très bien” and 18 “très bien avec les félicitations du jury”.
