Save an image from a video
Open a video, go to exactly the right frame – one frame at a time if needed – and save it as an image – a video to image conversion. At the video’s full resolution, with no upload.

How it is calculated
In short: This tool opens a video right in your browser, steps frame by frame to exactly the moment you want and saves that still at the video’s full resolution – as PNG (lossless), JPG or WebP. You can also export a whole series of frames as a ZIP. The video is never uploaded.
How it works
- Drag in a video or choose one. The frame rate is measured briefly.
- Use the slider for rough positioning and “◀ 1” / “1 ▶” to step one frame at a time.
- Pick a format and click “Save this frame” – as often as you like, at different points.
- For many frames: open “Image series”, choose an interval (e.g. every second) and save as ZIP.
Background: how frame accuracy works
A video is a sequence of frames at a fixed rate, for example 25 or 30000/1001 ≈ 29.97 frames per second (NTSC rate, ITU-R BT.1700). Frame n occupies the time window n/f to (n+1)/f. The tool always seeks to the middle of that window, so the browser reliably lands on exactly that frame despite rounding. It measures the frame rate by playing the video silently for a moment and collecting the timestamps of displayed frames via the browser API requestVideoFrameCallback. The frame is saved at the video’s native size (videoWidth × videoHeight), not the size of the preview.
Honest limits
- Whether a video opens depends on your browser: H.264 and VP9 work everywhere, HEVC (the iPhone default) in Safari and in Chrome/Edge only with suitable hardware.
- With variable frame rate videos (some phone recordings) a step can occasionally skip two frames; nudge back with “◀ 1”.
- A still is only as sharp as the video: motion blur and compression artefacts remain visible.
Privacy
Your video plays only in your browser and is never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How do I save an image from a video?
Open the video here, choose the moment with the slider and frame buttons, and click “Save this frame”. The image has the video’s full resolution.
How do I get a still from a video on iPhone?
Open this page in Safari, choose the video from your library, go to the frame and save it. The Photos app only lets you take a screenshot, which often has a lower resolution and player controls in the picture.
Isn’t a screenshot just as good?
Usually not: a screenshot has your screen’s resolution and may include player controls. Here the video’s original frame is saved – 3840 × 2160 pixels for a 4K video.
Which format should I choose?
PNG saves the frame without further loss but is large. JPG at 90% is much smaller and usually fine for photos.
Can I convert a video to an image sequence?
The image series saves up to 300 frames at your chosen interval as a ZIP, e.g. every half second. For every single frame of a long video, desktop software is a better fit.
My video won’t open – what can I do?
It’s almost always the codec. iPhone videos (HEVC) work in Safari; alternatively set Camera → Formats → “Most Compatible” on the iPhone so it records H.264.
