How it is calculated
Ringtone, alarm sound, a quote from a recording or a passage to practise: often you need just a few seconds of a long file. Here you cut it right in your browser – no software, account or upload.
How it works
- Drop in or choose an audio file. The waveform shows where it is loud and quiet.
- Set start and end with the sliders, by dragging in the waveform or by typing a time (e.g. 1:05.2).
- Check with “Play selection”, then choose a fade in and fade out so the sound does not start or stop abruptly.
- Choose a format – MP3 (smaller) or WAV (lossless) – and save.
How it works inside
The browser decodes the file with the Web Audio API into uncompressed samples. The section is cut to the exact sample, and fades are linear. MP3 is encoded by the LAME encoder (lamejs) in a background thread; WAV is written as 16-bit PCM. The size estimate is bitrate × duration (MP3) or sample rate × channels × 2 bytes × duration (WAV).
Honest limits
MP3 is lossy: cutting an MP3 and saving it as MP3 again re-encodes it – at 192 kbps or more this is hardly audible. Metadata such as title or cover art is not kept. Files up to 30 minutes; very long recordings need a lot of memory. Whether your phone accepts an MP3 directly as a ringtone depends on its operating system.
