How it is calculated
Meta tags sit in the head of an HTML page and describe it to search engines and social networks. The generator assembles the most important ones and escapes special characters such as quotes and & for HTML.
What the tags do
- title: the page title, usually the blue headline in search results. It should describe each page uniquely.
- meta description: the description search engines may use as a text excerpt. It does not affect ranking, but it affects whether people click.
- link rel="canonical": names the preferred address when content is reachable under several URLs.
- robots: with
noindexthe page stays out of search results; without it “index, follow” applies. - Open Graph (og:*): controls the title, description and image when a link is shared on social networks or messengers.
- twitter:*: card settings for X; if missing, X usually falls back to the Open Graph values.
Tips
A preview image with an aspect ratio of about 1.91 : 1, for example 1200 × 630 pixels, displays cleanly in most networks. How a title and description look in Google is shown by the SERP preview, the character count is checked by the character counter, and campaign links are built with the UTM builder.
Frequently asked questions
What are meta tags?
Information in the head of an HTML page that is invisible to visitors but read by search engines and social networks: for example title, description, preview image and indexing rules.
How long should the title and description be?
As a rule of thumb up to about 60 characters for the title and 70 to 160 for the description. Google names no fixed limit and truncates by pixel width; put important words first.
Does the meta description improve ranking?
No, it is not a ranking factor. It can appear as a text excerpt in search and so influence whether someone clicks. Google also often shows its own excerpt from the page.
What is Open Graph for?
Open Graph defines how a shared link looks in networks and messengers: title, description and image. Without these tags the services guess and often show an unsuitable image.
What does noindex mean?
The page should not be added to the search index. It remains reachable for visitors. Unlike a block in robots.txt, the page must be fetchable so the search engine can read the instruction.
