    How it is calculated

    How to unscramble words

    1. Type your jumbled letters, e.g. listen. Case, spaces and digits are ignored.
    2. Pick a search type: Words from these letters (any word you can build), Anagram (all letters used) or Pattern (known positions).
    3. Optionally set a minimum length. Results appear instantly, longest words first.

Example: the letters LISTEN make 58 words of three letters or more – ENLIST, INLETS, SILENT and TINSEL use all six, INLET, ISLET, STEIN and TILES use five, down to LIST, LENS and TEN.

    The three search types

Words from these letters: finds every word you can build from some or all of your letters – handy for Scrabble, Words With Friends, letter puzzles and word quizzes. Each letter can be used as often as you typed it.

Anagram: finds words that use exactly all of your letters, e.g. LISTEN → ENLIST, INLETS, SILENT, TINSEL.

Pattern: for crosswords and word games where you already know some letters and their positions. ? stands for exactly one letter, * for any number of letters. cr??e finds CRANE, CRATE, CRAVE, CRIME and 7 more; *ing lists words ending in -ing.

    Blank tiles and wildcards

In the letter modes, each ? works like a blank tile in Scrabble. ston? with minimum length 5 returns 14 words, including STONE, STONY, SNOUT and TONGS. Use one ? per blank you hold.

    5-letter and 7-letter words

For a 5-letter word unscrambler, set the minimum length to 5 in "Words from these letters" mode, or use the pattern mode with five characters: ????? lists all 5,151 five-letter words in the list, cr??e only those starting CR and ending E. For a 7-letter rack, choose Anagram to see words that use every tile: AEINRST gives ANTSIER, NASTIER, RETAINS, RETINAS and RETSINA.

    Tips for unscrambling by hand

Letters with accents are treated as plain letters (é = e). Words are searched up to 20 letters; at most 500 results are shown.

    About the word list

The list contains about 81,000 English words from SCOWL (Spell Checker Oriented Word Lists) by Kevin Atkinson, size 60 – the size used for standard spell-checker dictionaries. It includes American and British spellings (color and colour, organize and organise) as well as plurals and verb forms. Proper nouns, abbreviations and words with apostrophes or hyphens are not included, and words that SCOWL marks as slurs or strong swear words have been removed.

This is not an official tournament word list, so a word found here may not be valid in every game, and some rare game words are missing.
