How it is calculated
The 52 week money challenge is a savings plan: in week n you set aside n × step. With a $1 step that gives 52 × 53 ÷ 2 = $1,378 after 52 weeks. The total follows Gauss’s sum formula, so every variant can be calculated exactly.
Which variant suits you?
- Classic rising: the start is almost painless, but amounts get high towards the end – above $48 a week in the last weeks with a $1 step.
- Reverse: you pay the big amounts first while motivation is high, and the end gets easy. Fewer people give up.
- Alternating: small and large amounts take turns ($1, $52, $2, $51 …), the average load stays the same.
- Same amount: the same sum every week – simplest as a standing order.
Calculating from a goal
If you want to set aside $1,000, the tool works out the step: 1,000 ÷ 1,378 ≈ $0.73 per week and level. Because amounts are rounded to whole cents, the total can differ from your goal by a few cents.
Sticking with it
Your ticks live on your device only. Print the sheet and put it on the fridge, or let the ICS reminders ping you every Monday at 9 am. Important: keep the money genuinely separate, ideally in its own savings account. Interest is not included in the calculation.
