Taking 20% off €120 gross gives €96 – but the net price is €100. The rate applies to the net amount, so you have to divide by 1.2 instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in France?

The standard rate (taux normal) is 20%. There are also rates of 10% (e.g. restaurant meals), 5.5% (e.g. packaged food, books) and 2.1% (e.g. newspapers, reimbursed medicines).

How much is VAT in Spain?

The standard rate (tipo general) is 21% (Art. 90 Ley 37/1992). Reduced rates are 10% (e.g. restaurants, hotels, most food) and 4% (e.g. bread, milk, cheese, eggs, fruit, vegetables, books).

How do I remove French VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1.2 at the 20% rate. €150 gross ÷ 1.2 = €125 net, so the TVA is €25.

How much VAT is included in a Spanish price?

At 21% it is about 17.36% of the gross price: €1,210 ÷ 1.21 = €1,000 net, so the IVA is €210.

Is there Spanish VAT in the Canary Islands?

No. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are excluded from the IVA area (Art. 3 Ley 37/1992) and have their own taxes – use a custom rate for them.

Where can I calculate German VAT?
