How the day of the year is counted
January 1 is day 1 and December 31 is day 365 – or 366 in a leap year. For any date, the days of all previous months are added and the day of the month is added on top. For October 1, 2026 that is 31 + 28 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 31 + 30 = 273 days to the end of September, plus 1 = day 274. From March 1 on, every day number in a leap year (2028, 2032 …) is one higher.
ISO 8601 calls this format the ordinal date: 2026-274 means October 1, 2026. It is common in logistics, batch codes and food packaging, where it is often loosely called a “Julian date” – which strictly means something else.
Julian Date (JD)
Astronomers count days continuously from noon Universal Time on January 1, 4713 BC (Julian calendar). The tool shows the Julian Date for 0h UT and the Modified Julian Date (MJD = JD − 2,400,000.5), computed the same way as by the U.S. Naval Observatory.
