Fahrenheit to Celsius converter
Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius instantly – or Celsius to Fahrenheit, Kelvin, Rankine and Réaumur. Type a temperature, pick the scales and you get the answer with the formula worked through, plus a chart of everyday values from oven settings to body temperature.
Example: Temperature 98.6 · From: Degrees Fahrenheit (°F) · To: Degrees Celsius (°C) → Result: 98.6 °F = 37 °C. Source: NIST SP 811, Appendix B.9 – Temperature: T/K = t/°C + 273.15; t/°C = (t/°F − 32)/1.8; T/K = (T/°R)/1.8. Updated: .
How it is calculated
Fahrenheit to Celsius formula
°C = (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8 – or (°F − 32) × 5/9. The other way: °F = °C × 1.8 + 32.
- 32 °F = 0 °C (water freezes)
- 68 °F = 20 °C (room temperature)
- 98.6 °F = 37 °C (normal body temperature)
- 212 °F = 100 °C (water boils at sea level)
- −40 °F = −40 °C – the one point where both scales meet
Quick mental estimate: subtract 30 and halve (80 °F → 25 °C). It is a few degrees off in the everyday range; the converter is exact.
Oven temperatures and fever
Common baking temperatures: 325 °F = 163 °C, 350 °F = 177 °C, 375 °F = 191 °C, 400 °F = 204 °C, 425 °F = 218 °C, 450 °F = 232 °C. On a thermometer, 100.4 °F reads as 38 °C and 102 °F as 38.9 °C. The chart in the results lists common values from −40 to 250 in the direction you chose.
Kelvin, Rankine and Réaumur
Kelvin is the SI unit of temperature and starts at absolute zero: K = °C + 273.15. Rankine is the absolute scale with Fahrenheit-sized degrees (0 °R = 0 K), still used in some US engineering. Réaumur splits freezing to boiling into 80 degrees instead of 100 and is only of historical interest today.

Frequently asked questions
How do you convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32 and divide by 1.8. Example: (98.6 − 32) ÷ 1.8 = 37 °C.
How do you convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 1.8 and add 32. Example: 25 °C × 1.8 + 32 = 77 °F.
What is 350 °F in Celsius?
350 °F is 176.7 °C – in European ovens usually set as 175–180 °C.
At what temperature are Fahrenheit and Celsius the same?
At −40: −40 °F equals −40 °C.
What is absolute zero in Fahrenheit?
Absolute zero, 0 K, is −459.67 °F or −273.15 °C. No temperature can be lower, so the converter rejects values below it.
