How the selling fee calculator works
Everything starts from the order total = item price + shipping charged to the buyer. The major marketplaces apply their percentage fees to this total, not just to the item price. Then:
Payout = order total − all fees
Profit = payout − cost of goods − your shipping cost
Margin = profit ÷ order total
Example: Etsy fees on a US sale
An item for $25.00 plus $4.95 shipping, cost $10.00. According to Etsy’s help center, the transaction fee is 6.5% of the order total including shipping, payment processing for a US bank account is 3% + $0.25, and each listing costs $0.20.

The margin is 16.65 ÷ 29.95 = 55.59%. Optional Offsite Ads fees and Etsy Ads are not included.
What the presets contain
- Etsy: 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing (US bank account), $0.20 listing fee.
- Amazon (Individual plan): $0.99 per item sold. The referral fee depends on the product category, so it is not preset – enter the rate for your category. Example with an assumed 15%: 29.95 × 0.15 = $4.49 + $0.99 = $5.48 in fees.
- eBay: final value fees on eBay.com depend on the category, so there is no preset. Enter the rate and per-order fee shown for your category.
- Shopify: payment rates on the official pricing page are shown by location and could not be verified for the US, so enter the rate from your plan.
Every preset can be overridden: a value you enter replaces the preset, an empty field keeps it. The table shows where each value comes from. Sales tax, ads, shipping labels and currency conversion are not included. This tool is not affiliated with Etsy, eBay, Amazon or Shopify; the figures in your seller account are what count.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Etsy charge per sale?
According to Etsy’s help center (as of Sep 27, 2026): a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total including shipping, plus 3% + $0.25 payment processing for US bank accounts and a $0.20 listing fee. On a $29.95 order that is $3.30.
Why is there no eBay preset?
eBay.com charges final value fees by category, and the per-order fee depends on the order amount. A single value would be wrong for many items, so enter the rate for your category from eBay’s fee page or your seller account.
Why is the Amazon referral fee not preset?
Amazon’s referral fee varies by product category. The $0.99 per item on the Individual plan is preset; add the referral rate for your category from Seller Central.
Are fees charged on shipping?
Yes. For the preset platforms the percentages apply to the total order amount including shipping, so the calculator applies all percentage fees to item price + shipping.
What is the difference between margin and profit?
Profit is the dollar amount left after fees, cost of goods and postage. Margin relates it to the order total: $16.65 profit on a $29.95 order is 55.59%.
