How it is calculated
We use the IANA time zone database (tzdata), which browsers and operating systems use as well. For every day the UTC offset of both main zones (New York and Mexico City) is looked up; the difference only changes when one of the countries changes its clocks. In the UK and the EU that happens on the last Sunday of March and October at 01:00 UTC; in the US on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November (15 U.S.C. § 260a).
